I have a latex allergy and have been advised to avoid tomatoes along with several other foods. I was hoping someone else with a tomato allergy might have some ideas for substitutions. Thanks |

I just found out I have a tomato allergy but have had a laytex “sensitivity” for years. No link was told to me so far. |

Tomato allergy runs in my family. ((Incidently we also seem to have an allergy to bandages that contain adhesive. I am uncertain exactly what the culprit is- maybe laytex.)) For ‘pasta sauce’ I use olive oil (a bunch) and add lots of veggies chopped up. All together it makes a great sauce! It can also be used with meats or over bread/crust. If ordering italian style you can often get a white or pesto base in leu of tomato base. Also I specify no catsup anytime ordering out. Avacado slices can be a yummy substitute to guacamole when an eatery has used tomato in the guac. Where it can be difficult is with children in group settings. Pizza party can be not so fun unless a ‘no sauce pizza’ is ordered. I found that when my child spoke up often about the allergy most people were considerate. I did however run into issues with preschool. No one wants to be different or told they cant have a favorite food. My child would grab off others plates to have that craved item. It also got all over everything and everyone. I finally withdrew the child as the cross contamination was unavoidable in that school. Very best wishes. |

I saw a recipe one time for tomato free pasta sauce. What caught my eye is that it used pureed vegetables instead of tomatoes. Think sauce-like instead of tomato-like. |

I have had Tomato alergies for years now and found that at least with me the Tamillitoes don’t bother me a bit. (I have an aniphalactic reaction to regular tomatoes) also a combination of carrots and beats with the appropriate spices (Itialian) works well |

My husband also has a tomato allergy. I write an allergy-free cooking blog with some recipes that may interest you (if you were formerly a tomato lover!) http://www.angkantz.blogspot.com There are recipes for tomato-free chili, pizza, sloppy joe’s, pasta, easy skillet dinner, stews. Generally, I like to substitute tomato with fresh red peppers pureed with a little fresh lemon juice. Roasted red peppers are even tastier. Or, a package of frozen cooked winter squash, thawed and then pureed with the red pepper, lemon, and maybe a little paprika/sumac for color works well as a “tomato paste”. For pizza or pasta, I’ve found that pesto works the best (pureed garlic, basil, olive oil and pine nuts, if allowed). The chili uses turnips, but I’m thinking you could use any kind of pureed/watered down root vegetable to make a soup or stew thicker without tomatoes. I’ve read that tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, paprika, and peppers are all in the same food family (some people with allergies to one food in a family can still tolerate food in the same family). |

I also have a tomato allergy and have recently been replacing it with red peppers. I found a recipe for homemade bbq sauce that called for 3 (8oz) cans of tomato puree so I pureed red peppers in my blender until it made 24 oz. instead and the recipe turned out great the rest is 1/2 cup molasses, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup vinegar, and 1 tsp basil. Try going on cooks.com and search for red pepper sauce also. |

I went to a herbalist yesterday in desperation for my eczema. I was told that tomato can really exacerbate it, along with really acidic foods (such as citrus fruits) So I am cutting them out to see if there is any improvement. It will be interesting, as I eat tomotoes for most lunches, or would have tomato soup, and then nearly every second day my dinner would contain tomato of some variety-bolognaise, chilli, tomato curries, pasta sauces, I put them in ommletes, I have them on the side of everything. ALWAYS have them in my fridge, so I am intruiged as to whether this helps or not. fingers crossed though. Akantz, you can be sure I’ll be checking out your blog, already have it open in the next tab! |
