My eight year old has an intolerance to fructose and i am looking for recipes for cookies or breads that do not contain honey, brown sugar, molasses or maple syrup as he can not have any of those.

DFI – for breads and cookies, go organic for snacks. I’ve found cream-centered cookies (like oreos) and others in the organic section of our local grocer. Also, your grocery story bakery should have a list of ingredients for all their items. We’ve found that the italian bread works well, as well as Orlando brand ‘Italian Twist’ bread ( a new favorite! ). Better yet, a bakery store can be even more helpful if you become a regular. For pancake syrup, the local store brand is the only (and least expensive!) syrup she can have. Make friends with the local health food store as well.

You might try blue-agave nectar in place of honey or syrup. It has a slightly lighter flavor and texture, and works well as a sweetener. Also, sorghum molasses is available at some health-food stores as a substitute for regular molasses. You may want to double-check first to make sure your eight-year-old is not allergic to either of these items.

Definitely don’t try blue agave nectar. According to Wikipedia, the main carbohydrate is a complex form of fructose called inulin or fructosan.

I am also looking for recipes for fructose malabsorption, and I have had no luck. The only natural sweetener I can find that does not have fructose in it is dextrose. And, I cannot find any recipes for dextrose. You can’t bake or cook with Nutrasweet. Splenda tastes awful. All the other sweeteners have fructose in them.

If I understand correclty, if your daughter has malabsorption, she can probably have some small amounts of sucrose (table sugar), because the glucose apparently helps the body absorb the fructose half of sugar. But, if she has the genetic intolerance, she would not be able to.
