My name is Melissa Andreae and I am one of the co-founders of Cooking Allergy Free.
I was diagnosed with allergies in 2005; turns out I was allergic to over 20 of my favorite foods. It was definitely a struggle to change my lifestyle to avoid my allergies. However, in doing so and struggling through it, that has given me the drive to help make a good site to help others like me. Primarily, I work on researching and adding ingredients and allergens to Cooking Allergy Free.

Chickpea is listed under the Bean allergen (which is a subset of the Legume category)...

You could try onions or shallots. They might not be as pungent, but can have a similar flavor....
