Topic: Looking for Recipe / fructose intolerance

DFI – for breads and cookies, go organic for snacks. I’ve found cream-centered cookies (like oreos) and others in the organic section of our local grocer. Also, your grocery story bakery should have a list of ingredients for all their items. We’ve found that the italian bread works well, as well as Orlando brand ‘Italian Twist’ bread ( a new favorite! ). Better yet, a bakery store can be even more helpful if you become a regular. For pancake syrup, the local store brand is the only (and least expensive!) syrup she can have. Make friends with the local health food store as well.

Topic: New Allergy Requests / Fructose intolerance

Hang in there! My 16 yr old daughter was diagnosed with DFI March 08. There’s a simple and wonderful book you should get, written by Judy Smith called “Living With Dietary Fructose Intolerance: A Guide to Managing your Life With this New Diagnosis” (amazon.com – $10.99) – the only book I’ve found, a patient’s accounting and some recipes that are simple and good. After strict adherence to a fructose-free diet for about 3 months, my daughter was able to start introducing occassional fructose foods a few times a week, successfully (strawberries, bananas, peanut butter – good foods. I won’t buy processed foods for her anymore. it’s really helped to go as organic and simple as possible). I know it was hard to hear about his DFI, but after some adjustments, you’ll all feel better. I was told by a nutritionist that she should eat dextrose when she has fructose because it binds with the fructose, making it much easier to digest. Smarties candy, and some others have dextrose as the main ingredient. Best wishes!

Topic: Chef Central / Thanksgiving approaches

If anyone finds a good substitute for pancake syrup, please post! I’m cooking for fructose & sugar intolerances and am going to try barley malt syrup.. I’ll post if it’s a success (and my daughter will eat it..).
Thanks, Kellie B
