Topic: Allergy Support Group / New here--kids with allergies and attitudes!

Welcome!
Cutting out foods you have been eating all of you life is tough. I have little ones diagnosed at one year so I don’t have those issues. My kids don’t know what they are missing.

I am not allergic to Dairy but it gives me major sinus issues in large amounts. I only realized Dairy was the problem when I was avoiding it for my daughter. I now only eat it in small amounts 4-5 times a month when we get take out or go out to eat. (DD has Dairy allergy so our house is dairy free.) As an adult who LOVES cheese, ice cream and cheese cake, I find it VERY difficult to give it up completely even though I feel so much better when I do. I am willing to live with some discomfort to be able to have those things every once in awhile.

You daughter has some allergies that will prevent her from eating most commercial foods and at restaurants. Soy, Corn and Wheat will be the hardest to avoid. At her age I would work on getting her on board with her allergies first. Although you need your husbands support, your daughter is old enough to eat what she wants when you are not around. You (and your husband) will not be able to enforce food rules.

I would try to cut out the allergens and replace them slowly. (only because they are NOT life threatening) As your daughter starts to feel better she may be more willing to carefully avoid them. Hopefully your husband will see a change in her too and realize how important it is for her to avoid them.

Maybe present the changes as more of a healthier way of eating?

Good luck!

Topic: Looking for Recipe / Pizza please!

Some people think Nutritional Yeast has a cheese-y flavor to it. You can make a roux then add a Tablespoon of Nutritional Yeast (or more), until you reach the desired flavor. Pour it over the crust and sauce and bake.

Topic: Allergy Support Group / Something to put over rice??

Stir-fry without soy sauce? Maybe make or find a sweet and sour sauce to use with the stir-fry?
What about just adding seasonings to it, something like Mrs. Dash?
Making the rice with chicken/vegetable/beef broth instead of water would add some flavor.

There is a brown rice pasta, Tinkyada Pasta http://www.tinkyada.com/ , that is a really good sub for wheat pasta. We were wheat free for a while and used this pasta. Although the ingredients are just brown rice and water it has a similar taste and texture to wheat pasta.
This pasta could open up a lot more recipes for you.

My kids like a little oil and sugar mixed in with warm rice. More of a dessert but something different.

That’s all I can think of right now. I’ll post later if I think of something else.
Good Luck!

Topic: Allergy Support Group / Hey everyone! New here!

Hi and welcome!

Of your allergens we are only Dairy and Egg Free but were wheat free for a while too.

Corn tortillas work well for wrap type sandwiches as does lettuce leaves.
We have also used oat pancakes and waffles as ‘bread’ for sandwiches.
Leftovers work for lunch too.

There is a great cook book http://www.sophiesafecooking.com/ that has some tasty baked goods (and meals), made top 8 free with oat flour (oats run through the blender or food processor) and other common grocery store ingredients. There is no recipe for bread/rolls though. :-(

Tinkyada rice pasta, http://www.tinkyada.com/ is a tasty sub for wheat pasta. We thought it tasted the most like wheat pasta.

That’s all I can remember off the top of my head.
Best of luck sorting out your food allergies!

Topic: Allergy Support Group / hard to find food items

Just checked on another food allergy website I am a part of. Most if not all Kosher-for-Passover margarine is dairy and soy free. It is usually cottonseed based. Mother’s is the only brand I know of and you can only get it during Passover. Something to look for and stock up on in the spring. I have read that the sticks freeze well and many people buy cases to freeze to use through out the year.

My DD is allergic to Milk, Eggs and Peanuts/Tree Nuts too.
If your DD can have soy oil/lecithin you can try Fleischmann’s Light margarine in the tubs with the blue lids and Fleischmann’s Unsalted Sticks (for baking). Other Fleischmann’s margarine products have dairy in them. Depending on the area you live in, you may have trouble finding them but they are out there!
We don’t need to avoid soy, so if you need to avoid the oil too I am not sure what other options are out there for you.

Spectrum Palm Shortening is a direct sub for Crisco. You can use this in place of butter/margarine for baked goods, except for “fruit” crisp topping. (you need butter/margarine for a good flavor)

I have heard wonderful things about EnerG egg replacer but do not use it myself. Many food allergic people use this without reactions.

Let us know if you need anymore help!

Topic: Allergy Support Group / cornsyrup

Do you avoid anything else?

We avoid peanuts, tree nuts, egg, dairy, seafood, and a few others for my daughter. Cornsyrup is an acid reflux trigger for my son. I have been able to cook cornsyrup free plus our allergens, by making everything from scratch. Almost any recipe I have tried can be made cornsyrup free. There are usually cornsyrup free options for the ingredients you need, it’s just a matter of locating them.

What kind of recipes are you looking for?
